Pickle Creek Herbs | #CDM2017 Vendor

Tell us about your business

Hello from Pickle Creek Herbs! We are a small family farm in Pleasant Plain. We grow herbs, fruits, and vegetables that we then use to create artisan infused olive oils and vinegars, jams, soaps, salves, and balms. We take the process from seed to store and make everything ourselves using our own original recipes. We want to show how amazing herbs can be when they’re grown by passionate farmers who love their plants, their community, and their Iowa soil.

What inspired you to get involved as a vendor at Christkindlmarket Des Moines 2017?

We do fairs and shows all around southeast Iowa, and we got involved with Christkindlmarket last year because the uniqueness of the market jumped out — we hadn’t seen anything quite like it in Iowa before. And we had such a great time with the visitors, volunteers, and vendors at the 2016 Christkindlmarket, we couldn’t wait to come back!

What products will you be selling at Christkindlmarket Des Moines 2017 and why did you choose them?

To stay in the spirit of Christkindlmarket as much as possible, we’ll be selling only our handmade artisanal products that we create using our own herbs and recipes. We’ll especially be featuring festive holiday gift boxes, baskets, and bags.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Christkindlmarket Des Moines is not just shopping and eating—it’s an experience unlike anything else in Iowa. It’s especially charming when the lights start to shine, a cup of Glühwein warms the fingers (and your heart), and the cheer in the air evokes the Christmas magic you loved as a child.

Arts and Economic Prosperity 5 Study

Over the last 16 months, Bravo Greater Des Moines and more than 65 non-profit arts, culture and heritage organizations in Central Iowa have been participating in the Americans for the Arts Arts and Economic Prosperity 5 study.  The final report is complete and Bravo proudly shared Greater Des Moines’ results last night. This data clearly show that the arts mean business for our region:

  • $185 million in spending
    • $71.9 million by the organizations
    • $113.1 million by audiences
  • 5,677 full-time equivalent jobs employed by the sector
  • $16.8 million in government revenue
    • $7.46 million – local
    • $9.31 million – state

Click here for a full copy of Greater Des Moines’ report and for more information on the national study results and details.

  • This study lays to rest a common misconception that investment in the arts comes at the expense of economic development.  Rather, this study shows that the arts are a vital industry that supports jobs, generates government revenue, is a cornerstone of tourism and economic development, and drives a creativity-based economy.
  • Beyond the intrinsic value of the arts to inspire creativity and engage hearts and minds, arts organizations are also businesses, employing people locally, purchasing goods and services within the community, and supporting the regional economy.
  • When communities support the arts, they not only enhance quality of life but also invest in economic well-being.  The arts are not “nice to have” amenities but are “need to have” economic engines.

DMEHA Part of Wellmark BluesCare Giving Program

We’re proud to announce that Des Moines European Heritage Association has been accepted into Wellmark’s BluesCare Giving Program.

The employees of Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield participate in determining where charitable contributions are distributed in Iowa and South Dakota through this signature initiative of The Wellmark Foundation.

Wellmark employees volunteer more than 36,000 hours on their own time each year with qualifying organizations in Iowa and South Dakota. The Foundation matches these hours with monetary contributions to the employees’ designated charitable or educational organizations. For every four hours an employee volunteers, the employee can designate funding to the qualifying nonprofit of his or her choice.
If you’re a Wellmark employee, we’d love to have you volunteer at Christkindlmarket Des Moines or at any of the community programs provided by Des Moines European Heritage Association.
Does your organization offer a similar program? We’d love to be a part of it!
