Follow-up From Des Moines Arts Festival

As you might have noticed from our posts lately, there is a lot to do this summer in Des Moines. We’ve already visited the Downtown Des Moines Farmers Market and hosted a Dine to Donate program at Granite City. Don’t worry if you missed out. There’s still much more to come. We’ll be celebrating Christmas in July with a moonlight bike ride on July 16.

Check out the photos below from our booth at the Des Moines Arts Festival. The Prairie Meadows Community Outreach Program allows non-profit organizations to connect with the public. Both children and adults had a fun time making a paper ornament and learning more about Des Moines European Heritage Association and Christkindlmarket Des Moines.

About 80/35

80/35 is ready to begin it’s 9th life with two days of music in the heart of downtown Des Moines at Western Gateway Park, with three stages and more than 40 acts. Organized by the non-profit Des Moines Music Coalition, 80/35 was founded in 2008 with the vision to spark growth in the city’s live music economy — to think outside the box to further enhance a creative, vibrant culture.

Nine years later, the Des Moines music scene has played a pivotal role in improving the city’s quality of life. Bands are no longer merely passing through Des Moines via Interstates 80 and 35. They are stopping here and playing to bigger audiences than ever before. We believe in the power of music. To wake the spirit of the people and stir the street.

Even better, there is a community outreach program where local non-profit organizations can connect with the public. DMEHA will be located there, near the Community Choice Credit Union Performing Stage. Look for us on Grand Avenue off of 15th Street.

We’ll be sharing our own art project with visitors while we’re there. Come by our tent to make a paper ornament to take home.

Be a Part of Tradition: Glühwein Mugs!

Traditions are an important part of Christmas markets around the world. Handmade gifts, delicious food and vendor stalls are just a few of the well-known traditions associated with Christmas markets. Every market has their own style and history, but one tradition seems to unite them across countries. Glühwein mugs are a staple at markets each year.

For those who haven’t experienced Christmas markets before, Glühwein is hot mulled wine. This drink is a favorite for visitors and is often served in souvenir mugs. These mugs are often customized for each market or even for each year.

Christkindlmarket Des Moines is bringing a Christmas market to Iowa for the first time, we thought it was important to celebrate the traditions that make them special. For that reason, we are excited to announce Christkindlmarket Des Moines 2016 Glühwein mugs will be available during the event this December. We’re working with Sabine Voigt to create our mugs. Currently, she designs the mugs for Cologne, Germany’s Christmas market. Check out the example of her work below.

Dine to Donate with Des Moines European Heritage Association

There are a lot of ways to get involved and support Des Moines European Heritage Association. You can donate, volunteer, visit with us at the farmers market or cruise through Clive and West Des Moines with us. Those are all just this summer alone! We aren’t stopping there. For those who are especially busy or who love a good meal, we have a Dine to Donate Fundraiser coming up at Granite City Food & Brewery in Clive on June 16, from 11 a.m. to Midnight. It’s an easy and fun way to get out and support Des Moines European Heritage Association.

Granite City Food & Brewery will donate 10 percent of sales from anyone who presents the DMEHA flyer while ordering. You can also present a Facebook event invite, a newsletter with flyer or email. Total sales for each order includes food, drinks, to-go orders and catering. If you call in advance, the restaurant would be happy to get a large to-go order together and deliver it. Just be sure to give at least 24-hour notice and mention DMEHA Dine to Donate when ordering.

From 5 to 8 p.m., there will be a volunteer social at Granite City. If you’ve been looking for an excuse to get to know the organization or searching for opportunities to get involved, consider joining us. There is no better way to learn about our mission than from the people who have worked tirelessly for two and a half years to make DMEHA and Christkindlmarket Des Moines a reality.

We hope to see everyone there! RSVP to the Dine to Donate event here. RSVP for the volunteer social here.
