It has been a long tradition in many cultures to send a Christmas greeting. According to Smithsonian Magazine, during Victorian England, Sir Henry Cole became concerned he was being impolite for not returning Christmas greetings that were beginning to pile up. He asked an artist friend, J.C. Horsley, to sketch a family at a table celebrating the holiday surrounded by images of people helping the poor. Cole took the sketch to a printer and had a thousand copies made on stiff cardboard reading “A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year to You.” A Christmas Postcard was born!

A virtual marketplace with one-stop curbside pickup will offer a safe holiday event alternative
DES MOINES, August 20, 2020 – For 2020, the Des Moines European Heritage Association (DMEHA) has announced that it will change its annual in-person holiday experience to “CDM Curbside,” presented by Christkindlmarket Des Moines.
This year’s event will feature an online marketplace open Nov. 9 to 22, hosting several vendor stores featuring unique holiday wares and edibles. After purchasing, customers can choose various drive-thru pickup times from Dec. 3 to 6, the weekend the traditional in-person market would have taken place.
“Through CDM Curbside, DMEHA will continue to support our amazing vendors and allow our marketgoers the chance to enjoy their annual holiday shopping tradition by purchasing one-of-a-kind gifts, in a safe and responsible manner,” says Suzanne Hull, DMEHA president and founder. “After careful consideration for the health and safety of our volunteers, vendors, performers and attendees, our board decided CDM Curbside was the way to go in 2020.”
CDM Curbside presented by Christkindlmarket Des Moines will allow customers to pick up their purchases from multiple vendors at one place and time from the comfort and safety of their vehicles. Prior to pick up, vendors will deliver the customers’ orders to one location allowing volunteers to then group the orders together by customer. Vendors will not be on site for curbside pickup.
As always, the DMEHA continues to seek volunteers to assist in its year-round activities, as well as Christkindlmarket Des Moines. Volunteer shifts start at only two to three hours. All interested in volunteering or becoming a sponsor should visit the main website at www.christkindlmarketdsm.com or the group’s Facebook page: ChristkindlmarketDesMoines or on Instagram at: christmasdesmoines or Twitter at: christmasdsm

Cheers to NB Golf Cars for donating the use of one of their vehicles to help us move materials and product around Principal Park during Christkindlmarket Des Moines 2020!
NB Golf Cars was founded in 1972 by the Ness Brothers (NB) from Hendricks, Minnesota.
In 1970, Omer Ness purchased a golf car after he injured his leg. The golf car made it easy for him to navigate around the golf course. Several people inquired about Ness’ golf car and eventually the idea for NB Golf Cars was born. In 1988, Omer’s son, Jim Ness, joined forces with his father to carry on the tradition of the Ness family business. NB is one of the oldest Club Car distributors in existence today.
When Omer Ness retired in 2007, the McGowan Capital Group of Sioux Falls put their faith in the NB name and became co-owners of this thriving golf car business. NB Golf has consistently grown in service and sales throughout their 40 years in business. In addition to the original Hendricks, MN store location, we have added two new stores in Des Moines, Iowa and Sioux Falls, South Dakota. NB Golf Cars has won several awards for sales and customer service distinction from Club Car. Most recently, we were awarded a Distributor of Distinction Award. We proudly added this to our Overall Superior Performance Award (2008) and our Superior After-Market Performance Award (2009). Together, these awards represent our commitment to our customers.
We are proud to serve this region and we hope to see you soon in one of our stores.

We’re pleased to include Hessen Haus among our family of 2020 sponsors!
The Hessen Haus perfectly recreates the authentic atmosphere of an old-world German bier hall. The twenty-one imported German biers on tap, authentic German fare on the menu, and sounds of live music on the stage – including local bands and regional polka – create a lively yet cozy atmosphere where large crowds gather to pass the boot and small groups find themselves making new friends.
A combination of a state in west-central Germany and the German word for house, the name Hessen Haus was chosen for its authentic origins and welcoming feel. The state of Hessen which the bier hall is named for plays home to more than six million inhabitants – which are referred to as Hesses if male or Hessins if female. In English, occupants are known as Hessians – a term affectionately applied to our more frequent visitors to the restaurant.

Centennial Warehousing Corporation has graciously agreed to continue to donate storage space for our wooden vendor stalls.
After working with a member of the Des Moines Woodworkers Association, we were able to rework the design so when torn down, each stall fits on a double-wide pallet which can be easily moved around the warehouse with the help of a forklift.
We have worked with Waukee High School, Southeast Polk High School and Johnston High School Industrial Arts Students to build our traditional wooden vendor stalls.
As a non-profit, community partners are extremely important. Many thanks to Centennial Warehousing Corporation!
